For all you cellphone videographers looking to broadcast your oh-so-important daily lives' activities to the ether with that handy-dandy video camera you call a smartphone, Qik has finally announced their highly anticipated public beta.

What, you didn't realize that smartphone of yours was a full-fledged wireless video camera capable of streaming live video to the web for all to see? Well, Qik will have you thinking otherwise with their almost real-time video streaming service.

The new public beta now offers compatibility with handsets like the Samsung Blackjack-II, Motorola Q, Samsung SHG-i600, and the Nokia N78. Regardless of whether or not Apple has seen fit to give the iPhone or iPhone 3G any video recording capabilities, Qik is pushing hard to get their iPhone application out the door. EU Aims To Replace TV with Live BitTorrent Streaming

Researchers in 21 different European nations have come together to create a project designed to bring live BitTorrent streaming to the Internet and to change the way that content is viewed by the average consumer. The $22 million project, called P2P-Next, is a zero-server solution that combines traditional BitTorrent streaming with new technology dubbed Give-To-Get which rewards people with bandwidth for sharing on the site. The hope of these researchers is that the new technology will allow users to stream content to thousands of people using only the same amount of bandwidth that would be used now to stream to only one or two people. The testing has just begun and the code for the new technology isn’t even expected to be stable for another month or so but the researchers are actively hoping to be able to implement this new product soon.

Netflix To Stream Videos To Microsoft's Xbox 360

An exclusive partnership between Microsoft and Netflix will allow movies and TV content to stream to owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360 gaming console through Xbox Live. The deal gives Netflix a much larger audience than it will get with its set-top Netflix Player by Roku. Netflix subscribers with an Xbox Live Gold membership will pay no additional fees. have forged an exclusive partnership under which Netflix will begin streaming feature films and TV programs to owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360 gaming console. Beginning this fall, Netflix subscribers who also have an Xbox Live Gold membership will be able to download and view movies at no additional cost, said Microsoft Corporate Vice President John Schappert.
"Watching movies at home will never be the same," Schappert said. "We are creating a completely new social-entertainment experience, and Xbox 360 will be the only video-game system where you can access your library of instantly streamable movies from Netflix and turn any room into a virtual movie theater."
On In 30 Seconds
Mike Goodman, director of media and entertainment at the Yankee Group, thinks the new partnership has strong potential. "It's a nice deal for Microsoft if it drives some of the Netflix subscriber base over to the Xbox," Goodman said, but "is even more important for Netflix."
Last May, Netflix unveiled its new Netflix Player by Roku -- a $99 device for enabling Netflix subscribers to directly stream movies and TV episodes to TV sets. "With 12 million subscribers, Xbox Live is a much bigger base than Netflix is going to get with its proprietary box," Goodman noted.
Xbox Live requires no PC to enable movies and TV episodes to be viewed on TV sets. Xbox Live Gold members will be able to use their Xbox 360 controller or media remote to fast-forward, pause and rewind the downloaded movies and TV episodes.
Netflix intends to make its library of 10,000 movies and popular TV episodes available when it launches on Xbox Live in late autumn. Netflix members will simply add movies and TV episodes to their queues at the Netflix Web site.
Their choices will be automatically downloaded to the Xbox 360 for display on any TV screen connected to the game console. Once selected, Netflix movies will begin playing over Xbox Live in as little as 30 seconds, the partners said.
Eclipsing Sony
Xbox Live members can already download movies and purchase TV shows from the Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store, which currently offers both standard-definition and high-definition TV content from more than 45 networks and studios. Microsoft's new deal with Netflix shows just how far it is prepared to go to eclipse Sony Entertainment, which has already launched its own online movie-rental service for PlayStation 3 owners.
With the exception of NBC Universal, every major studio is already onboard with Sony to offer movie downloads via the PlayStation network. However, Sony's TV-episode lineup is so far limited to offerings from Fox.
Microsoft says it will soon offer TV shows and movies from NBC Universal, including content from the Sci-Fi Channel, MGM, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and the USA Network. In this case, Microsoft is the beneficiary of a pricing rift that caused NBC Universal to back out of its distribution deal with Apple's iTunes Store last year.
Historically, gaming consoles have been about playing video games, but today they are evolving into home entertainment systems, Goodman noted. "With Nintendo going in a different direction, this is clearly a battle between Microsoft and Sony, and with Sony still in catch-up mode," he said.

Newspaper websites must consider live streaming to keep their online video content relevant, a senior editor of a leading European newspaper has said.

Charles de Vroede, deputy chief editor of Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, told Journalism.co.uk the future of newspaper video would be live streaming, because any other format would lack immediacy.

De Vroede, who was part of a panel on newspaper video at the Digital News Affairs (DNA) conference, said de Telegraaf staff were already using cameras with live streaming capabilities to publish to its website to cover entertainment news stories.

"News videos online quickly become very old. For a newspaper in print that's not a problem, because everything is a day old. Being on the web as a newspaper means instantaneous news and this will happen for video," said de Vroede.

"I believe the future is in live streaming - for me live streaming is the missing link between newsgathering and newswriting."

However, fellow panelist Bas Broekhuizen, editor of Volkskrant TV, said live video news was too expensive for newspaper websites to produce and offers 'no longtail effect' for publishers' sites.

Broekhuizen said newspaper video online should not try to compete with television broadcasters, but should focus on producing video in formats that have a long-term appeal to viewers as opposed to breaking news.
